The Chamber of Commerce & Private Sector Organizations

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry is an organization based on public law. The Chamber endeavors to increase business opportunities and economic growth in Suriname. As there is only one Chamber of Commerce and Industry it serves as the national organization. Individual businessmen, corporations and other businesses are mandatory to register their business and trade name in the Trade Register Department of the Chamber.

The registered members are classified in eight categories (branches).

  • Other Trade and Services
  • Domestic Industry Manufacturing
  • Insurance and Banking
  • Transportation
  • Hotel, Restaurants and Entertainment
  • Mining, Industrial Processing Industry
  • Forestry and Forest Processing Industry

Objectives

  • A Strengthened Chamber of Commerce and Industry as a business support organization and strengthened other business support organizations.

Strategies

I           Appropriate environment that fosters all enterprises, in particular micro, small and medium size companies.

  • Actively advocate the importance of the private enterprises as engine of economic growth.
  • Actively advocate the importance of the small and medium enterprise as the major provider of employment.
  • Actively advocate a tax regime that stimulates entrepreneurs to be involved in business. The tax regime is the most important instrument to provide stimulus or discouragement to entrepreneurs, be it, income taxes, wage taxes or raw material regulation etc.
  • Identify and make accessible adequate financing for enterprises.
  • Help to create and implement an integral industrial development plan based on international environmental, safety and health standards and trends; taking into consideration the interest of the indigenous peoples and civil society.
  • Intensify trade promotion activities.
  • Improve interaction between the Chamber, entrepreneurs and other relevant parties.

II         Improved awareness of entrepreneurs toward economic opportunities, threats and international trends.

  • Actively scan environment for potential opportunities, threats and international trends.
  • Provide retrieved information through appropriate communication channels.
  • Advocate the importance to meet global standards.

III        Involved policy making.

  • Identify policy makers.

  • Involve policy makers in business endeavors.

IV        Legal and regulatory business related barriers either removed or minimized.

  • Identify legal and regulatory barriers.
  • Initiate and assist in formulating improved and actualized legal framework.
  • Actively participate in formulating new laws and regulations.
  • Actively organize and mobilize interest parties and participate with them in relevant groups.  

V         All non-legal and non-regulatory business related barriers either removed or minimized.

  • Identify non-legal and non-regulatory barriers.
  • Identify relevant parties involved.
  • Create deliberation forum for relevant parties to reach solutions in consensus.
  • Actively assist implementing solutions.

VI        An up to date trade register

  • Maintain the trade register.
  • Actively promote the registration of all economic activities.

  • Manage all relevant business and technological information.
  • Build and manage systems, which will provide required information through appropriate communication channels.

VIII     An improved strategic alliance between business and organizations.

  • Identify the needs of enterprises.
  • Identify the regional and international trends.
  • Make inventory of existing local and international networks.
  • Create strategic and industrial networks.

IX        A strengthened Chamber of Commerce and industry as a business support organization and strengthened other business support organizations.

  • Identify the needs for and availability of business support.
  • Strengthen the Camber of Commerce and industry as a business support organization as needed.
  • Strengthen or create other business support organizations where appropriate.
  • Provide business support.

X         A work environment characterized by effective teamwork and opportunities for all employees.

  • Develop and implement human resource management policy.
  • Stimulate evaluate and appraise job performance.
  • Regularly evaluate and appraise job performance.
  • Improve customer orientation through training.
  • Evaluate and adapt job description and responsibilities.


The Suriname Trade Industry Association (STIA)

This association was founded on March 28, 1950. Its basic principle is to advocate free enterprise in production and services, whereby everyone within the limits of public interest, has the right to develop activities to the best of his or her ability. STIA is a cooperation of individuals pursuing a business in Suriname. The association's objective is to strongly promote the interest of its members and the economic and social welfare of society. STIA membership is open to every person, partnership or legal entity pursuing a business in Suriname.

The Association of Suriname Manufacturers (ASM)

This Association was established on September 25, 1980. The main objectives of this body is to take care of the interests of the national production sector in general, and the Surinamese manufacturer in particular, in order to promote: "MADE IN SURINAME". The membership concerns are divided into three categories namely common members, extraordinary members and honorary members.
